about

"She Won't" was a song I wrote for the first of two bands I was in during the late 90s called Guava. It was a 5/4 swing song with a fairly technical melody in the verse; I'd been listening to a lot of vocal jazz singers such as Al Jarreau at the time, and wanted to challenge my singing. Originally, this song had a Rhodes-esque electric piano as the backing, but with the brush drumming and the difference 13 years makes in my voice, the piano fit better.

The lyrics are about half the original, and half new treatment because I couldn't find the final version of the original lyrics—just a lyric sheet that my friend Bryan DeBois had printed out when he was doing background vocals for a show.

My first car, a stalwart Ford Escort, was the unofficial band mascot & transport vehicle, and was nicknamed the Fruit Scoot because it moved a lot of Guava bandmembers and equipment **drum kick** It was immortalized on our self-produced CD's cover, which lives on in the cover to the Guava "mkI" Release Project songs.

I don't really have the range I used to, but this is still a fun song to sing. Grab a cup of coffee and chill.

lyrics

I met a girl upon a subway that I never ride
It seems I missed the one I always take
She smiled at me as I edged by her and excused myself
I was so surprised that chemistry came into play

She asked about a novel that I carried on with me
We introduced and gave our hands a shake
My finger lost the page that I had held so carefully
All this because I missed my regular subway that day

But she
She won't be smiling at me
Playing her games all the while
Filling my world with her smile
And her perfume
'Cause, sadly
She and I won't make it "we"
She won't see how we would live
She won't know all I could give
'Cause she can't, and she won't.

I looked at where we were and saw my stop was drawing close
I told her that I had enjoyed our time
She laughed at me and teased me that I was oblivious
And wrote her numbers on a scrap of paper with a smile

I waved as I stepped on the platform from the train we met
But on the street a storm surprised and stunned
With no umbrella with me I was shortly sopping wet
And soon those numbers in my pocket had completely run

So she
She won't be smiling at me
Playing her games all the while
Filling my world with her smile
And her perfume
'Cause, sadly
She and I won't make it "we"
She won't see how we would live
She won't know all I could give
'Cause she can't, and so she won't.

Da da da da da da da...

But she
She won't be smiling at me
Playing her games all the while
Filling my world with her smile
And her perfume
'Cause, sadly
She and I won't make it "we"
She won't see how we would live
She won't know all I could give
'Cause she can't, and so she won't.
