about
Shortly after the release of At Odds At Times in 2004, I started work on a remix album. Fairly early on, I knew I wanted to do a acoustic version of "And You Laugh." I was finally able to drag this one to the finish line.
All of the percussion you hear, with the exception of the shaker that comes in at 0:40, is generated by my body. The bass drum-esque instrument was played by holding the mic against my sternum and tapping my chest just above it using my fist. The swishing instrument is done by sliding my hands back and forth right in front of the mic. Finally, there's finger snaps.
I always say that a good way to judge the quality of a song is whether it's adaptable and still "works" in a completely different style. I hope you like me trying that with "And You Laugh."
lyrics
Tell me how it's come to this?
Tell me why I feel I missed?
Tell me why I didn't stop it
Try to stop it from the start?
Tell me, with your voice so pure,
Tell me why I feel so sure
Tell me how the castles that we built have pushed us so apart...
And you laugh
It rings musical, and so kind
And you show me all the doors that I kept tightly locked inside my mind
And you laugh
Rings purity, and so bold
And you show me all the walls that I had built so tall inside my soul...
And you laugh, and you laugh
And you smile, you beguile
And you laugh, and you laugh
While you're breaking my heart
And you laugh, and you laugh
And you smile like a child
And you laugh, and you laugh
While we're drifting apart
And you laugh, and you laugh
And you smile, you beguile
And you laugh, and you laugh
While you're breaking my heart
And you laugh, and you laugh
And you smile like a child
And you laugh, and you laugh
While we're drifting apart...
Tell me why I dream my dreams?
Tell me, is life as it seems?
Tell me why I lay here on
A concrete sea and shattered glass?
Tell me, while you laugh and smile,
Tell me how you've grown so wild.
Tell me why the sky and why the earth and why we're in between.
