about

FICTION AND OTHER STORIES is my first album of original music since 2004's At Odds At Times, and marks a return to the original style of music that I loved growing up & learning to write: piano-driven lyrical pop/rock. 12 tracks, speaking of all that makes life worth living.

Track Name: Reclaim
Welcome back
It’s been so long
I don’t know if you recall
We used to run and play and laugh and smile as children in this place.
Fifteen years
Maybe more
Since the day you closed that door
Since you put away your childish things and let pain cross your face.

Remember when
We bathed in sunlight
And over grass
We’d dream?

I just thought I’d stop and say hello
I know you’ve been gone
You’ve wandered alone
I know that this world can’t seem the same to you
But think about the years and what we know now
We go marching on
We’ve gone grey and old
And all that you see below is yours, there, to reclaim

Another day, another year
Another wait delayed your fears
Just hold it in and never reach for stars we see with eyes so closed
A picture here
A picture there
Static memories faded cares
Place them in their padded pages
Covered once, they’re now exposed

Remember when
We stood in sunlight
And under trees
We’d dream?

I just thought I’d stop and say hello
I know you’ve been gone
You’ve wandered alone
I know that this world can’t seem the same to you
But think about the years and what we know now
We go marching on
We’ve gone grey and old
And all that you see below is yours, there, to reclaim

Hey!
Don’t you try to take the blame
All the ills just come the same
Hey!
What’s past is past in time, in truth, in name...

Welcome back
It’s been so long
Do you remember all the songs?
And remember all the things we said we’d do as years went on?

Remember when
We bathed in moonlight
An empty place
And dreamed?

I just thought I’d stop and say hello
I know you’ve been gone
You’ve wandered alone
I know that this world can’t seem the same to you
But think about the years and what we know now
We go marching on
We’ve gone grey and old
And all that you see below is yours, there, to reclaim

(It’s just the same...
There is no flame...
With joy comes pain...
Time to reclaim...)

And in the sky...
Take to the sky...
And from the sky...
Track Name: Better Than
Hello, hello!
You know I'm so glad to see you
I’ve waited so long to meet you, out here
Out in this better world we’ve found
But so long, so long
We stood with our backs to mirrors
Afraid that our eyes would see us in here
Inside this bitter land
That we made for ourselves

So dry your eyes
Cause this time, this time is better than
Time may fly
But this time, this time is better than
Laugh and smile
Cause this time, this time is better than
Everything we've done before...

Good day, good day!
You see, it's the sun that's shining
You've got such just perfect timing
Meet me out in this better world that we found
In years, in years
We thought that we'd find the answers
And if we ran just some, faster, we'd see
We'd see a shining land
Not knowing it was right here

So dry your eyes
Cause this time, this time is better than
Time may fly
But this time, this time is better than
Laugh and smile
Cause this time, this time is better than
Everything we've done before...

Just trying to make your way back home, you wandered, you wandered
Just trying to pick the pieces off the ground that you found
And trying to find that clock you saw, you wondered, you wondered
You felt the world, it spun you round, and dropped you right side down

So dry your eyes
Cause this time, this time is better than
Time may fly
But this time, this time is better than
Laugh and smile
Cause this time, this time is better than
Everything, anything that we have done before...

Meet me, out in this better world, in years in years.
Meet me, out in this better world, we thought that we’d find the answers.
Meet me, out in this better world, we’d see a shining a land, it was right here!
Track Name: Do-Over
She told me, “you can't take it back,”
As she walked off down the road.
She laughed and said, “can't change the past,
Can't bring heat back to cold.”

And when you call
Up on the phone
And when you hear that tingling tone
With no-one there
That even cares
To hear your footsteps in the dark, you're thinking
About when you said it's all past
And when you said that it won't last
And when she smiled and when she laughed
And so now I'm saying

I'll stop time and do it over
I'll turn the world back a thousand nights
I'll stay the sun still in the morning to hold back the daybreak, love
I'll stop time and I'll put things right

She shook her head and closed her eyes
When you said “we've grown apart.”
She laughed and said, “what's done is done,
We can’t take things back to the start.”

And in the nights
And in the miles
And far away you feel her smile
When you're alone
No other soul
To hear your heartbeat in the dark, you're thinking
About when you said it's all past
And when you said that it won't last
And when she smiled and when she laughed
So now I'm saying

I'll stop time and do it over
I'll turn the world back a million nights
I'll stay the sun still in the morning to hold back the daybreak, love
I'll stop time and I'll put things right

And so far away
The years go in an instant, now
So far away
Eons in a blink
And so far away
I’ll stop the world and look for you and me
And then you’ll see

I'll stop time and do it over
I'll turn the world back a million nights
I'll stay the sun still in the morning to hold back the daybreak, love
I'll stop time and I'll put things right
Track Name: On Your Wall
I signed up for this site when it was new and rare.
They called it Facebook, s’posed to “help connect and share.”
I’m not so sure these days I understand ‘bout that
Unless by “sharing” they mean “spamming shitty apps/“

Just got an email, seems somebody “poked” my page
That just sounds vaguely filthy, guess I’m showin’ my age.
But, hey, here’s mobile uploads, hope you like my shots!
Blurry little camera phone pictures? Man, how could you not?

We’re Facebook friends
Until the end
And that’s all we’ll ever be
Years have passed
We spoke last
Back in fall two thousand-three
But I won’t call
I’m on your wall
It’s better than reality
When real life ends, we’re Facebook friends.

I’m just so happy that you’ve come and found me here
Some time if you’re in town we’ll go and drink some beers.
But since that’ll never happen, here is an Option B:
A “Happy Birthday” on your wall; please, do the same for me.

We’re Facebook friends
Until the end
And that’s all we’ll ever be
Candid shots
That I forgot
If you tag ‘em I will see
But I won’t call
I’m on your wall
It’s better than reality
We’re Facebook friends until the end.

Here we go!

Look, I’m making connections
From my home!
I’m so social, yet I’m so alone.
I got my iPhone in pocket,
Post so much,
My updates tell you what I had for brunch (too much information, said)
And lunch (too much information, said)
My snacks, (too much information, said)
And dinner...

So now it seems they’re changing shit up every day
This feed they’ve got just makes it hard to break away
I’ve got it on my iPhone, iPad and my Mac,
How did they program it? With PHP, or crack?

Fuck me, I’m checking out my feed twelve times an hour
I’ve tried to get away but haven’t got the power
Ex-girlfriend stalking, it just gets me so enthralled
All in all I’m just another prick that’s on your wall

... Facebook friends
Until the end
And that’s all we’ll ever be
Friend request
Though I forget
When exactly did we meet?
But I won’t call
I’m on your wall
It’s better than reality
When real life ends...

Facebook friends (I’ve tried to let you into my space)
Until the end
And that’s all we’ll ever be
I tried to love (I’ve tried to lead a life linked in)
Google+
But talked to no-one for a week,
I won’t call (And though I tweet, it won’t replace)
I’m on your wall
It’s better than reality
We’re Facebook friends until the end.

I’ve tried to let you into my space
I’ve tried to lead a life linked in
And though I tweet, it won’t replace
Track Name: Dawn and Smoke
Cold outside
I early rise before the dawn
Silent hour that comes before the storm
Bustling cast
A hush and gasp from everyone
After this no more I'll stand alone

I can't say “I” without a contrast
That you standing here can give to me

Take my hand
No more a man with you apart
We’ll be as one with loving hearts

With open eyes
Look straight ahead
There's a mountain to climb, there
Don't clutch the past
And don't look back
Its weight slides off just like a cloak
With no asides
No script we've read
We'll make it up as we go on
And here we'll stand
In the dawn and smoke

Looking back
I try to track the twisting turns
How we tried to take these trials astern
Ticking clocks
The paths we walked, the years we yearned
To recognize a place we laugh and learn

I can't be “I” without a language
That you laughingly can teach to me

Take my hand
No more at odds at times alone
We'll make these shells into a home

Our home
We'll make this place our home
Our home

With open eyes
Look straight ahead
There's a mountain to climb, there
Don't clutch the past
And don't look back
Its weight slides off just like a cloak
With no asides
No script we've read
We'll make it up as we go on
And here we'll stand
In the dawn and smoke

With open eyes
Look straight ahead
There's a mountain to climb, there
Don't clutch the past
And don't look back
Its weight slides off just like a cloak
With no asides
No script we've read
We'll make it up as we go on
And here we'll stand
In the dawn and smoke
In the dawn and smoke...
Track Name: (I'm A) Bitter Man
If you’re trying to cheer me
Just keep dreaming
Cause I’m keeping my bag now
Back down, and leave me to my thoughts.
Tell me, “look on the bright side,”
I tried, too bright,
And I’d rather just stay here in the dark

I’m so sorry that I
Can’t be just a bundle of some
Happy little rays come shining
From me, cause you see, that I’m a

Bitter, bitter man
In this bitter, bitter world
And I just can't rectify it
But I'm not gonna deny it
It's kind of my “thing”
And she’s a pretty, pretty girl
In this bitter, bitter world
But you know that she improves me
And damn, her smile can move me
She makes a king
Of this bitter man

If I want your opinion
I’ll ring ya to bring it
And you can tell me your theories
Bout the economy and why we should eat more fruit,
Or whatever the reason
You’ve decreed that I’m peevish.
Maybe I should go meditate... align my chi

But this weight just seems to
Work for me, cause when I am
Happy it has really got some
Meaning, cause you see that I’m a

Bitter, bitter man
In this bitter, bitter world
And I just can't rectify it
And I'm not gonna deny it
It's kind of my “thing”
And she’s a pretty, pretty girl
In this bitter, bitter world
But you know that she improves me
And damn, her smile can move me
She makes me king

Maybe I’ll just stay in bed all day
And work until dawn
I think that I should write a book someday called,
“One Hundred and One Ways To Keep Kids Off Your Lawn”

I’m so sorry that I
Said that you’re a dumbass, I
Instead meant that you can’t just
Understand that I enjoy being

Such a bitter, bitter man
And a crabby, crabby man
And a kinda surly man...

And I just can’t rectify it
But I'm not gonna deny it (I’m just a bitter man)
It's kind of my “thing” (I dream on pillows, I dream in bed)
And she’s a pretty, pretty girl
In this bitter, bitter world
But you know that she improves me
And damn, her smile can move me (I’m just a bitter man)
She makes a king
Of this bitter man

I’m a bitter, bitter man...

Make it madder
And so bitter
Be so crabby
And sarcastic

Make it crabby just so bitter and so surly, said
Track Name: All Our Days
Go on wandering through this night
The hours just fade away, fade away to black
Go not gently, don't go polite
This late hour is yours, calm and close, don't hold back

There is no dawn
There is no day, tomorrow
There is no sun
There is no clock, tick-tocking sorrow when

All the dust settles in the air
And the whispers you hear when you're asleep
Tell tales of hope and despair
Of the memories bells that peal in the deep

Where is the dawn?
Where is the sun, in the east?
Where has it gone?
Soon we are one
But this night is first

And we'll dance,
(We’ll dance here forever, and ever)
And we'll pray,
(We’ll pray for the future, together)
And think back to all our days,
(And all that will come, we’ll try to remember)
And we'll laugh
(We’ll dance here forever, and ever)
And we'll cry
(We’ll pray for the future, together)
And look back to all our lives
(And all that will come, we’ll try to remember)

Turn your head, love, and see
All that was past, and me

From up here you can look upon
This great home of ours, spinning in the dark
All the gleams of light, pins of thought,
All soon disappear, flash and burn like spark

Where is the dawn?
Where is the sun, in the east?
Where has it gone?
Soon we are one
But this night is first

And we'll dance,
(We’ll dance here forever, and ever)
And we'll pray,
(We’ll pray for the future, together)
And think back to all our days,
(And all that will come, we’ll try to remember)
And we'll laugh
(We’ll dance here forever, and ever)
And we'll cry
(We’ll pray for the future, together)
And look back to all our lives

Turn your head, love, and see
All that was past, and me

Oooo...
Today I’m wading in the water, I’m trading out my bothers, I say

We’ll dance here forever, and ever
(Turn your head, love)
We’ll pray for the future, together
(Raise your head up)
And all that will come, we’ll try to remember
(Stand at the edge of the world, here, with me, at the end of all things)

Where is the dawn?
Where is the sun, in the east?
Where has it gone?
Soon we are one
But this night is first

And we'll dance,
(We’ll dance here forever, and ever)
And we'll pray,
(We’ll pray for the future, together)
And think back to all our days,
(And all that will come, we’ll try to remember)
And we'll laugh
(We’ll dance here forever, and ever)
And we'll cry
(We’ll pray for the future, together)
And look back to all our lives
(And all that will come, we’ll try to remember)

Turn your head, love, and see
All that was past, and me
Whatever was, will be
Track Name: Other Stories
Come along! Come one, come all! Gather near to hear the tale I'll tell for you
Of love, of hate, of mystery and pain, and all between
Take a soul, take a boy, take a girl, take a choice in a sea of turns and divergencies
Lift your head you will see all the paths that Are and all that Could Be.

Take, for instance, “A”, pointed as it seems
Not a “B” or “C”, or even “1” to “3”
With this choice of “A”, “B” must also be:
Because it wasn't made into “A”.

So you see how it comes to be that infinity is made from all we see
And as soon as we choose another story is made, from all the possibilities

I get lost in seas of chance
I drown in tides of circumstance
I wonder if my line'll advance
Glance to find my glory.
I raise my head and raise my glass
I drink to all the years that passed
All my castles turn to ash
In another story.

So you've come to this place out of time out of space wanting some kind of guidance I may give
Looking out over all of the choices that you could make, and those did
Are you proud? Are you meek? Do you look? Do you need me to stand on your shoulders and sight for you?
Can you see far beyond or only “A” or “B” or “A” or “B”?

I get lost in seas of chance
I drown in tides of circumstance
I wonder if my line'll advance
Glance to find my glory.
I raise my head and raise my glass
I drink to all the years that passed
All my castles turn to ash
In another story.

Maybe I was at war and searching for peace,
Or imprisoned alone and seeking release,
Or a man on a road, or a child on a swing,
Kicking high to the sun with the clouds as my wings...

Maybe I was at war and searching for peace,
Or imprisoned alone and seeking release,
Or a man on a road, or a child on a swing,
Kicking high to the sun with the clouds as my wings.
Maybe we are all doves with our wings shattered, torn,
And we're trying to fly when instead we should mourn;
Or we're angels that fell, broke our backs, broke our souls;
He laughs from above cause we don't know our role.

I've got stories I could tell:
Tales that spring, that grow, and swell;
Tales of Heaven, tales of Hell;
Tales of death and glory.
I'll sing mankind's ebb and tide:
Songs of war and songs of pride;
Songs of how we lived and died,
And the world we sullied.

But I won't leave it all to chance
I will choose another path
I'll forsake what's come to pass
Sing this memento mori
Raise my head and drain my glass
See my days replay in a flash.
Close my eyes and smile my last;
Time for another story.
Track Name: Father's Son
See the sun it sets as always
See the sky, it fades
See the blue go dark so smoothly
It happens every night;
Still a welcome sight.
Come dusk, come night, come moonlight
Come while it's dark
Come flame the beacon fires
Keep them burning bright
Send those ships that light

Hear a voice that's calling to me
Hear the words that smile
Here, pain and joy and sadness
Gather on the pile
See years they fall aside now
See grey just fade
See time and miles and questions
Our lives we made
The price we paid

Before you’re gone
I’ll take the time
To learn what lay behind those eyes
I’ll take them back
Those things I said
Words don’t matter, days from dead
I’ll wish you well
Be on your way
There’s nothing more that we can say
Despite the miles
How fast I run
I find that I’m my father’s son.

Wear a red carnation like a
Fire-kissed lapel
From the sea upon dark water
Riding on that swell
Hold them fast the last dark hours, now
Hold back the squall
Let the fire burn out, and smolder
Try to slow the fall
Morning brings the call

Before you’ve gone
I’ll take the time
To learn what lay behind those eyes
What I’ve inside
The things I do
So much of who I am is you
I’ll wish you well
Be on your way
There’s nothing more that we can say
Despite the miles
How fast I run
I find that I’m my father’s son.

Before you’ve gone
I’ll take the time
To learn what lay behind those eyes
I’ll take them back
Those things I said
Old words don’t matter, days from dead
I’ll miss you so
But memories
They shine just like a pyre at sea
Despite the miles
How fast I run
I find that I’m my father’s son.

See the sun it sets as always
See the sky, it fades
See the blue go dark so smoothly...
Track Name: Won't Say Anything
I won't say anything
Nothing at all
Can't say anything
With my heart so tall
I won't say anything
Dim light so pale
Can't say anything
With my heart so frail
Just close your eyes
And breathe in the time, here
Won't even try
To say what's inside
I won't say anything
Just hold you near
Can't say anything
Just wait what to hear

You won't fear anything
Nothing of harm
Can't fear anything
When in my arms
You won't fear anything
I'll hold you close
Can't fear anything
It can't impose
Just close your eyes, dear
And realize, here
Nothing defies
This joy in your smile
I won't say anything
Just hold you near
Can't say anything
Just wait what to hear

We won't say anything
Just live our lives
Can't say anything
No war, no strife
You won't fear anything
This I will swear
We can't fear anything
When we both are there
Just close your eyes
And look to the time, we'll
Look back on life
And all of our trials
I won't say anything
Just hold you near
Can't say anything
Just wait to hear.
Track Name: Benediction / Born In a Star
I won’t say anything at all...
I won’t say anything at all...

When I was a child,
I spoke as a child,
Understood as a child,
I thought as a child.

But now as a man
I thought that the plan
Was to put away childish thing.

But take away
Your childish things
Your childish ways,
And you can’t see
The wondrous things
That surround our days

I’m telling you, keep all your childish things, don’t ever let them go!
Look at this world and this universe with them, grab all there is to know!
Look with the eyes of a child, and smile!
Look at years ahead with wondrous regard!
All of the paths in the past that you could take, together, they have brought you
Here to this place, on this world, in this space, awaiting all that you want to do;
And every day, remember all there is within you once was born in a star!

At odds, at times...

I’m telling you, keep all your childish things, don’t ever let them go!
Look at this world and this universe with them, grab all there is to know!
Look with the eyes of a child, and smile!
Look at years ahead with wondrous regard!
All of the paths in the past that you could take, together, they have brought you
Here to this place, on this world, in this space, awaiting all that you want to do;
And every day, remember all there is within you once was born in a star!

Born in star!
They were born in a star!
We are all made of stars!
We are all made of stars!
We were born in a star!
We were born in a star!

We are all made in stars...
We were born in a star...
We were born in a star...
We were born in a star...
We are all made of stars...
We were born in a star...
We are all made of stars...
We were born in a star...
We are all made of stars...
We were born in a star...

Look behind,
This is rebirth;
Sun-dappled wings, they will keep you
Aloft.
